EXERCISE

Exercise 1

For our first exercise, we were tasked to sketch three vehicles for each different types of crafts: Aircraft, Seacraft, Landcraft, as part of our practice for Vehicle Design.

We were told to draw the silhouette of the vehicles, and learn about its perspectives. Also, using basic shapes to understand the forms.
(Around this time, I did not have a Wacom tablet.)

Exercise 2

We then move on to drawing vehicles based on inspirations, such as: game controller, keys, stapler, basically anything we can use as inspiration.

Exercise 3

The next exercise was to just quickly sketch any form of vehicle that we could come up with, I believe this exercise was to help us quickly sketch something, or anything, at any given time.

Exercise 4

For exercise 4, we were tasked to take inspiration from any animals we could think of, and also play around with the silhouettes to see if we could make something out of it.

Exercise 5

Our final exercise was the quick-paint and collage method. But instead of quick-paint, I just quickly drew out some silhouettes.

Started off with just drawing out the silhouettes.

From the 10 silhouettes drawn, I chose 5 to be refined.

After that, I chose 3 to be further refined and detailed. I added some texture and shading to the vehicles.

This method was the collage method, I took parts from an existing vehicle and stitch them to create something.

Out of the 10 collages, I chose 5 and make a silhouette out of them.

From the silhouettes, I chose 3 and add some shading and texture to them.

ASSIGNMENT

Assignment 1

Our first assignment was to create a vehicle inspired from an existing one, such as from sci-fi movies.

Below here are the vehicles that I will use as inspiration for this assignment.

After getting some inspiration, I decided to create a cargo vehicle designed to carry army or troops. I would name it Silverfish, reason being is because of its shape and silver surface.

I used ZBrush as some sort of a guideline because it's hard to draw it from imagination. But the idea for its prawn-like shape is that, it is easy to maneuver the vehicle since the vehicle is going to be on a large scale.

Then, I continued with some further sketches and ideation for the design of the vehicle.

Bike-like design

Train-like design

Croissant shaped design

Next, I finalized my design with this:

Refining

Detailing

Finally, I added some background environment to give the look and feel to it.

Below here is the feedback given by my lecturer, Mr Kannan.

Assignment 2

For our second and final assignment, we were tasked to create and design a vehicle based on our Thematic World Concept that we have come up with during this Entertainment Design specialization.

For my world concept, my vehicle would be set not too far into the future. Probably around the year 2028. The idea of it being that the world would be more eco-friendly, where petrol won't be used to fuel vehicles, instead the vehicle will run on electricity that is discharged from the road itself.

Below here is the reference that I will be using to create my vehicle concept. The vehicle is based of a smart car (It was a mouse at first that inspired me), and the Tron bikes will be mostly used for detailing.

This here is a quick rough orthographic sketch on how my vehicle will look like. Again, I used ZBrush to help me realize/visualize it.

I then create a wireframe and blueprint for the design. I used a person as a scale.

With the blueprint, I further refined the vehicle wireframe using ZBrush and then outline it in Photoshop.

After settling the shape of the vehicle, I then move on to how the tires will look like. From the grooves of the tire to the rim design.

After designing the tire, I moved on to designing the headlights for the car. And I also sketch out on how the doors of the car will open.

The next task was a simple one, I just have to find the perfect color scheme for the vehicle.

Lastly, I have chosen the color for it and finalize my design with some details here and there. Using the Tron as inspiration and reference, I added the neon light on the vehicle. The purpose of the hand print is for the locking mechanism of the vehicle. Since this vehicle is set in the future, I figured there won't be a need for physical keys.

For the look and feel, I added some background to it and also some rain to show the feats of the vehicle.

REFLECTION

Problem encountered during this module?

There were so many different methods to design vehicles (or any creative art in particular). I was so stuck with my own way of doing things, and it took me a while to get used to using different designing methods. But as I slowly progress further into the course, I have now see that the methods given weren't useless at all.

Other than that, coming up with a design is pretty hard because for me I can't be inspired that easily. It is mostly based on my mood that will allow me the ability to draw something. But once I'm hooked on something, I will finish it.

Challenges faced during this module?

During the first few weeks, it was tough for me. I can draw silhouettes but I couldn't really like 'understand' them, how it works and what not. But with more exercises, I have found a way to use them and it helped me create my own style of designing things.

Where would you want to incorporate this?

During this whole course of Vehicles and Prop Design, I didn't really enjoy it at first because I wasn't really into vehicles. But the methods that I have learnt from this class was pretty useful, not only for this module, but for my other subjects too (or anything related to design). Thanks to the Final Assignment, I was able to enjoy the module. I don't know how or why, but designing vehicles was fun and cool. While finishing the Final Assignment (adding texture and details and everything), I thought that maybe I could work as a concept artist in a job that produces vehicles. And if the vehicles were to come to life, I'd be proud of myself.
